Refuge Friends are incredibly valued partners of the Refuge System. Dedicated and passionate about their refuge, Friends show their support in a variety of ways, including advocating for their refuge and the Refuge System as a whole on Capitol Hill.

Earlier this week, three Friends from across the country came to Washington, D.C. to urge their members of Congress to support various bills that benefit the Refuge System. Nell Baldacchino from Maryland, Keith Mays of the Friends of Tualatin River National Wildlife Refuge in Oregon, and Sharon Shafer from Nevada, educated Congress about the needs of their local refuge, and the System as a whole.

The Friends told personal stories of how reduced budgets are having devastating impacts on their refuges and that they are emblematic of what is happening in the Refuge System nationwide. They advocated in support of increased funding for the Refuge System’s Operations and Maintenance Budget and the Land and Water Conservation Fund, passing the Resource Protection Act and an increase in the Duck Stamp, as well as for $100 million for refuges in a future Transportation Bill. They also advocated against the Refuge Establishment Bill which strips the Fish and Wildlife Service of its ability to establish a refuge or expand an existing refuge without Congressional action.

These meetings make an enormous difference, and it’s to the credit of our Friends community that members of Congress are paying attention to the issues facing America’s wildlife refuges.
