Its vast eelgrass beds support nearly the entire global population of Pacific black brant and emperor geese, while its lands are vital to subsistence lifestyles and cultural traditions for Alaska Native communities.
A proposed land swap could pave the way for a road that would irreparably harm this critical habitat, endanger wildlife, and undermine the integrity of the National Wildlife Refuge System. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service has released a draft Supplemental Environmental Impact Statement for the proposal and is accepting public comments until Feburary 13th, 2025.
