The number of national wildlife refuges in the United States increased to 568 with the establishment of Green River National Wildlife Refuge in Kentucky. A ceremony was held in Henderson, KY to celebrate the 10-acre easement that is the beginning of a Conservation Partnership Area with a planning target to purchase or protect 24,000 acres. This is the second national wildlife refuge in Kentucky and will be located near the confluence of the Green River and the Ohio River in Henderson County, KY. This area has long been valued for its diverse system of bottomland hardwood forests, wetlands, and upland bluffs that provide high-quality habitat for waterfowl, migratory birds, and sport fish.
Acquisition to increase the size of the refuge will be done by working with willing landowners as opportunities and funding allow. Goals for establishing the refuge include:
Protect and manage wetlands and bottomland forest habitats to support waterfowl, migratory birds, and threatened and endangered species;
Provide high-quality hunting and sport fishing;
Provide opportunities for public use and environmental education and interpretation;
Collaborate with partners to protect and enhance biodiversity and water quality and quantity within the Ohio River and Green River watersheds, benefiting both people and wildlife; and
Ensure healthy wildlife populations for the benefit of Kentuckians and all Americans.
Special guests attending and speaking at the ceremony include Senator Mitch McConnell and Secretary of Interior David Bernhardt.
