National Wildlife Refuge Association Announces Staffing Updates

Organizational updates ensure smooth transition, continued support of mission

WASHINGTON, DC, AUGUST 10, 2021 – 

The National Wildlife Refuge Association recently announced two key staffing updates in Operations and Development. These roles, integral in the current and future success of the organization, include:

Chief Operating Officer

Mark Musaus is departing as Chief Operating Officer. Mark has been instrumental in leading the organization’s finances and served as liaison with the Board Treasurer and Executive Committee. Mark took on the role as COO during a time of major transition for the Association and worked tirelessly to strengthen the organization’s work for National Wildlife Refuges across the country.  Mark received the Refuge Manager of the Year Award in 2000, the Department of Interior Superior Service Award in 2001, and the DOI Take Pride in America, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service Federal Land Manager of the Year award in 2005.

Marco Aguilar takes over as the National Wildlife Refuge Association’s Chief Operating Officer. Marco has an extensive track record of operational and financial excellence, helping launch Lang Strategies, a DC-based leadership consulting firm. Prior to Lang, he served as Vice President and Chief Operating Officer at the DC Chamber of Commerce, where He was responsible for the organization’s day-to-day operations, and led the Chamber from its financial challenges to one of the strongest and most fiscally-responsible business groups in Washington, DC and the entire region. Marco also served as executive director of the Hispanic Council on International Relations (HCIR), where he streamlined operations and directed fundraising initiatives for individuals, foundations and corporations.

Director of Development

Courtney Lewis current Director of Development who leads the organization’s individual and major giving program, is taking a three-month leave of absence.

Susan Rutherford will take over as Acting Director of Development and continue the organization’s robust donor engagement strategy. Susan has been involved in development for 25+ years as a staff member, volunteer, or consultant to educational, social service, or arts organizations.
