The National Wildlife Refuge Association congratulates Martha Williams on her confirmation as the Director of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. Director Williams’ many years of experience in wildlife conservation, policy, and management will serve her well in her tenure leading the National Wildlife Refuge System, the largest and most expansive set of lands set aside for wildlife and habitat in the world.
The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service’s National Wildlife Refuge System is the nation’s only set of federal lands dedicated to the conservation and management of America’s native wildlife. These lands harbor hundreds of rare, threatened, and endangered species and protect America’s natural heritage. It is the largest and most diverse network of conservation lands in the world, encompassing more than 850 million land and marine acres across dozens of unique habitat types.
In an age of unparalleled challenges to our nation’s natural resources and wildlife habitat, we look forward to working with Director Williams as she tackles the impacts of climate change and historically low budget levels, and builds on the work of the National Wildlife Refuge System to protect, restore, and enhance our nation’s national wildlife refuges for years to come.
